Case Study 2

A woman goes to her doctor because she is suffering from heartburn felt to be due to acid reflux. She is immediately started on Nexium (esomeprazole). She finds that this helps and continues taking it for several years as she finds that when she stops it, she immediately gets a return of her reflux symptoms.

Fast-forward 6 years. She is now seeing her doctor for extreme fatigue, restless leg syndrome, and has recently noticed some heart palpitations. She also is here to review her latest Dexa scan that shows osteoporosis. You know where this is going, and she walks out of the doctor's office with 3 more prescriptions. It's very likely more chronic symptoms are about to occur.

What if she ran her Nexium medication that she she could not live without through the Mytavin calculator and supported her potential deficiencies?

  • Fatigue: May have been prevented by supplementation of B12, Magnesium and Iron
  • Restless Leg: Would likely have never occurred had she been taking Iron
  • Heart palpitations: Prevented by Magnesium supplementation
  • Osteoporosis: May not have been significant if she kept her Calcium up
